Bolsa Chica Wetlands - Summer Day Programs 2015
Explore and Discover the Wetlands this Summer!
Exciting discoveries await your budding scientist this summer at Bolsa Chica. Science is fun so come take a journey with us as we travel beyond the classroom to delight in wild wonders during week-long hands-on day programs. Young scientists will find themselves in immersive outdoor activities, experiments and science exploration that stimulate wonder and critical thinking at the same time! Participants going into grades 1-6 will get to experience the wetlands inside and out in a fun and educational week full of adventure.
We will be offering these three sessions for different grade levels.
Week 1: July 6-10 Grades 1-2, Wetland Explorers!
For children going into Grades 1 or 2 this September 2015
Become an explorer and discover what a wetland ecosystem is all about! We will learn about the different animals that live here at Bolsa Chica, and even create our own crazy critters. Participants will explore how a plant survives and why they are important. Have fun taking your sock pet experiment on a walk to see what they pick up. Through hiking, playing in the mud and creating art, kids will learn how the animals and plants work together to make up an ecosystem!
Week 2: July 13-17 for Grades 3-4, Rock it!
For children going into Grades 3 or 4 this September 2015
Become a geologist and find out why our environment all depends on the way the Earth was formed! See first-hand on our trails what makes rocks move and what we can learn from them. Perform experiments using cookies to test the different layers of rock! Create fossils, art projects, and even design your very own eco-friendly product in this exciting week long gig as a rock star!
Week 3: July 20-24 for Grades 5-6, Way to Go H2O!
For children going into Grades 5 or 6 this September 2015
Water, water everywhere! Discover why wetlands are so important to our water system. Become scientists and do important research and experiments on the water quality of the Bolsa Chica wetlands. How do plants survive when they live in saltwater and how do they survive when they don’t get enough rain? Participants will work in the lab and find the answers to these questions and more!
Program Content and Staff
Our programs are aligned with current California State Standards and the new Next Generation Science Standards for each grade level, and are designed to work with the unique resources we have here at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. We integrate learning with creative hands-on and immersive lessons to engage participants in science. All our staff are trained and experienced in science education, and go through extensive background checks and continuing education.
