Bolsa Chica Wetlands - Summer Day Programs 2017

Explore and Discover the Wetlands this Summer!

Exciting discoveries await your budding, young scientist this summer at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Join the Bolsa Chica Conservancy on a journey of science and adventure as we travel beyond the classroom to delight in the local, native wilderness during this week-long day program. Young scientists will find themselves in immersive outdoor activities, experiments, science-based crafts, and science exploration that stimulate wonder and critical thinking at the same time! Participants going into grades 1-4 (appeals can be made for students entering Kindergarten and 5th grade) will get to experience the wetlands inside and out in a fun and educational week full of learning and discovery.

Monday, 10 July: Wetland Wonders

What is a wetland? Wetland Explorers will discover the answer to this question and more as we start the week with an exciting introduction to ecosystems, watersheds, and wetlands. Explorers will begin their science discovery journals, take their first immersive hike in Bolsa Chica, participate in science-based activities, and watch fun, informative films like Bill Nye the Science Guy and the Magic School Bus.

Tuesday, 11 July: Food Webs

Now that your Wetland Explorer is an expert in wetlands, it's time to learn more about the plants and animals that live in it. Where do wetland residents get their food? Explorers will discover these answers as they once again venture into Bolsa Chica with their science journals to record their findings. Crafts and outdoor activities will further reinforce what is discovered on the trail.

Wednesday, 12 July: Marine Marvels

Wetland Explorers dive into the marine life that lives in the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Explorers will get to meet and interact with marine animals from sharks to sea stars as they learn about how wetlands and the ocean are connected while reviewing the concepts of food webs with marine foundations. To complete this exciting day, Wetland Explorers will get to venture to the beach for a few hours of science and fun!

Thursday, 13 July: Animal & Plant Adaptations

Adaptations day allows for Explorers to to grasp the various adaptions that the plants and animals have to allow them to survive in their habitat. We'll go over adaptations unique to wetland environments as well as other, connected habitats like the ocean and the coastal sage scrub habitat. During this day's Bolsa Chica hike, we'll be looking at the aspects of plants and animals that could be useful for survival. Science-based activities and crafts will give Explorers hands-on experiences that will reinforce the lessons learned.

Friday, 14 July: Community Connections and Conservation

After discovering the details of wetlands and watersheds, Wetland Explorers will learn about the connections between people, the community, and the wetlands. Explorers will learn about some of the things that they can do to help the wetlands and the environment through methods like restoration, composting, and recycling.

Program Content and Staff

Our programs are aligned with current California State Standards and the new Next Generation Science Standards for each grade level, and are designed to work with the unique resources we have here at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. We integrate learning with creative hands-on and immersive lessons to engage participants in science. All our staff are trained and experienced in science education, and go through extensive background checks and continuing education.
