Bolsa Chica Conservancy Speaker Series: Expert Talk – Wetlands at Work: Valuing Ecosystem Services by Dr. Stephen Comello (Stanford University)

 

Salt marshes like Bolsa Chica are among the most biologically diverse and productive ecosystems on earth, providing many benefits and services to both wildlife and humans. Understanding the relationships between humans and natural ecosystems through a study of ecosystem services is an important management tool. Learn about the results of a year-long study that establishes an economic framework for valuing the ecosystem services provided by Bolsa Chica.

 

 

Speaker Biography

 

Stephen Comello is a Research Fellow at the Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance at Stanford University, and is a Research Associate at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Comello is currently working with Professor Stefan Reichelstein, studying the cost of reducing carbon emissions, the cost competitiveness of different energy sources and environmental risk pricing and policy.

 

Dr. Comello recently completed his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering (with a PhD Minor in Management Science and Engineering) at Stanford University. His research developed a framework for evaluating firm-owned ecosystem services. Given the interdisciplinarity of his work, his dissertation connected a number of domains, including: lifecycle assessment, biogeochemical and energy modeling, economics, financial accounting and decision analysis. Prior to his PhD work, Dr. Comello held positions in project management and infrastructure project development in Canada.
