Earth Day Is Every Day
Caring for wildlife, improving how we use our natural spaces, and learning about our environment is something we should all strive to do year round. Recently, marine mammals and seabirds like our mascot the Pelican, have been struggling from a seasonal occurrence of “domoic acid poisoning” brought on by a bloom of harmful algae that causes some wildlife to get sick.
Here at The Bolsa Chica Conservancy, we do not take or treat sick or injured wildlife, however our Restoration and Research team is trained to handle some wildlife and can lend a hand in rescuing sick animals found at the Bolsa Chica wetlands and transporting them to get the care they need. This young Brown Pelican was recently rescued and transported for the appropriate care, giving it a better chance at survival.
- If you find a sick or injured animal while visiting Bolsa Chica DO NOT pick it up or try to transport it. Wildlife can become confused and injure you or themselves, leave it to the professionals!
- Call us at 714-846-1114 and we can help coordinate a response!
- If you are at a local beach, contact an on-duty life guard or call the City of Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division at 714-536-5281
- For marine mammals like sea lions or dolphins, contact the Pacific Marine Mammal Center at 949-494-3050
Our Education team works together to interpret these environmental events and delivers insightful programs to help our students and our community better understand our favorite wildlife and what we can all do to best help our wetlands and coast.
Join our amazing team this month to learn, care, and embrace Bolsa Chica. Come celebrate Earth Day with us and our partners for the Bolsa Chica Earth Day Fair on Sunday April 27th and find resources to get involved throughout the year.
Support our non-profit organization as we live to make Earth Day Every Day!
