Sponsor a Bench in the
Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve
|
|
|
|
The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve (BCER) Bench Replacement Project aims to replace 33 benches through community sponsorship. The Reserve originally had 48 benches, but several were removed due to safety concerns. The new benches will provide safe, durable, and comfortable seating for visitors.
Guided by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), this project is made possible through the leadership of our partner organizations — the Bolsa Chica Conservancy, Bolsa Chica Land Trust, and Amigos de Bolsa Chica. The department (CDFW) will lead and manage the entire project, including coordination with each non-profit group, installation, documentation, and long‑term oversight. Bench sponsorships are $1,000 with each sponsorship lasting 10 years and offering a renewal option. Additional donations can be made to support education or habitat programs.
Email Carissa@BolsaChica.org for more information to sponsor a bench today.

Critter Corner!
Learn more with activities and facts
at the Bolsa Chica Interpretive Center
Fly in to learn all about May’s featured critter:
The Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger)
- Mostly active at dawn and dusk but can be seen throughout the day.
- When newly hatched their upper and lower bill is equal in length, but by 4 weeks old they develop a lower bill that is nearly a half-inch longer than the upper.
- Using the unequal length in their bill, Black Skimmers drag their lower bill in the water and snap up fish as they come into contact. It is an usual and breathtaking spectacle.
- The oldest Black Skimmer recorded was at least 23 years old according to the identification band found in 2013.
- Black Skimmers often compete for space where California Least Terns nest, keep a keen eye for these interesting birds at Bolsa Chica this summer.
