Good Tidings- BCC in June

Good Tidings!

Thank you for coming to Earth Day!

Earth Day 2025 was a huge success! Thank you to the 485 guests that came to celebrate with us last month. Although the rain threatened to dampen our plans the day before, Sunday 4/27 proved to be bright and delightful. We really appreciate all the hard work of our staff, interns, volunteers, and especially our partners at Bolsa Chica State Beach and the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club for helping to make this a wonderful day in our community. If you weren’t able to make it, have no fear, read on to see what other fun programs are coming up this month because Earth Day is Every Day at Bolsa Chica!
What Do We Use This Van For?

The Wetlands On Wheels or WOW program is a special opportunity for us to bring the wonder and beauty of coastal habitats anywhere! Equipped with an aquarium and tide pool animals to touch and interact with, as well as taxidermy, pelts, and an array of hands-on learning activities, the WOW van is a party on wheels.

In fact you can rent the WOW van for birthday parties, summer camps, office parties, or community events in addition to traditional school visits. Share with us what you have in mind, and we’ll find a way to make it happen! Email
JoAnn@bolsachica.org to start coordinating your WOW experience.

Last year, Wetlands On Wheels served 8,284 students and community members, 73% from underserved communities or Title 1 schools. Donations and grants help to make this work possible and keep us rolling, but it’s not always enough especially when those “rainy day” unforeseen events occur.

Sadly, our aquariums recently suffered from an infection which has resulted in countless hours of cleaning and providing extra attention and care for our animals. Unfortunately a number of our fish and tidepool animals did not recover from the illness. The good news is that our aquariums are in great hands and everything is back to healthy levels! Your donation today will help us as we are looking to purchase new fish for our aquariums in June and expand our collection of tidepool animals so we can continue teaching students who don’t have the resources to visit the coast.

Break-Ins Heat Up In The Summer

Following a surge of recent events, the California Department of Fish And Wildlife has issued a response and these tips to keep your visit safe at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve this summer:
HOW TO PREVENT AND REPORT CRIME:
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Always lock your vehicle.
  • Do not leave belongings (purse/wallet, computer, books, photography equipment, tools, etc.) unattended, and if possible, leave them at home.
  • If you need to hide any belongings, do so before you arrive at the parking lot.
  • If you have a state beach pass, do not leave it in plain sight (such as hanging on your rearview mirror).
  • Call 911 if you witness an active break-in.
  • Contact HBPD at 714-960-8811 if you are a victim of a car break-in at BCER. If possible, remain on-site so the police department can collect any evidence.
It is incredibly important to report all car break-ins to the police! When
incidents go unreported, it is much harder for us to understand the extent of the issue and find appropriate solutions. If you have previously been the victim of a car break-in and have not reported it, you can still do so.
