Coastal Cleanup Day is in the Bag
On Saturday, September 20, The Bolsa Chica Conservancy hosted a Coastal Cleanup Day event with our partners at Bolsa Chica State Beach and Tree People. Together a total of 235 pounds of trash were removed from our sensitive coastline and wetlands.
THANK YOU to all who volunteered and participated. The health of our wetlands is because of people like YOU!
If you missed the fun, don’t worry, we regularly host cleanups throughout the year so stay tuned for the next opportunity. You can also mark your calendar for next year, Saturday, September 19, 2026. Fun fact- Coastal Cleanup Day is always on the 3rd Saturday of September!

The Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax)
- Adults have a black crown and back with the remainder of the body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs.
- These birds are ambush predators often standing at the water’s edge waiting for prey, mainly at night or early morning or evening.
- Eating primarily fish, mussels, squid, and crabs they are right at home in the wetlands, but they can also eat lizards, snakes, and small mammals.
- BCC staff think that they look like the cartoon character “Gru” from the animated movie Despicable Me! What do you think?
